How 'local' IS local ?

It goes without saying that local singles will indeed be the most local the nearer to home we are prepared to look. Naturally however, the wider we cast the net the better the choice. It has to be a sort of compromise. Only a few very lucky people who probably live in a big town or city will have a large number of truly local singles to choose from.

Unfortunately many people who make 'local singles' the main criteria for what they are looking for very often fail to find someone they feel is really suitable. If you can't find someone to your liking living very near to yourself what can you do?

We have cars today, so the definition of 'local singles' must be a very different one now to what it meant in the days of horse-drawn carriages! 40 miles by car takes under an hour and two people with cars can meet half way. In days past 40 miles, once the horse had been watered and saddled, probably took half a day and you could hardly arrive looking your best after a ride through wind and rain after which the poor horse's own wellbeing had to be considered first. A date with someone living a couple of towns away was not something you would undertake on a last minute romantic whim at eight o'clock at night!

The internet also brings people much closer together, as does air travel and so on.

Those people who don't drive and don't have a car - or who feel they can't conduct a romance with someone who takes more than ten minutes to meet up with - have a very limited choice. They may meet through internet dating but often will join local singles clubs etc. If you are one of these people the best idea is to look through the personal columns of your local papers for singles social clubs in your area. Alternatively place and advert yourself in the 'lonley hearts' column. If you can find nothing then consider starting something yourself.
